The eve of the Taurus full moon, deep in Scorpio season. In astrology, Scorpio dives into the shadow while Taurus yearns for the light, and both call us home to the heart.

Walk through a mystic forest under the full moon, soft ground underfoot, a great horned owl hooting somewhere like a friendly sentinel. Send a golden cord from your bare feet into the earth. Match the resonance of the great oak in the clearing and let tension fall like autumn leaves down the cord. Wade into a moonlit pool that shimmers like liquid silver, float, and let a golden light of inner strength rise from the depths. Say it aloud: I am confident in this moment. I am safe and secure. Then climb out, strangely dry, and look up into the cosmic tapestry.

Along the way I read two short prayers by the Irish poet John O'Donohue. Your role is simply to shine.

You gain insight with every decision that you make, no matter how easy or challenging the results of those decisions turn out to be.

The other side of the mirror

I think that's really interesting, is that the work of this interplay between shadow and light is where all of the alignment actually comes from. It's one thing to live in the light all the time. It's great, but sometimes you get sunburn and you don't even recognize it. Well, I mean, me, fair skin, get sunburn, and we don't necessarily recognize it until we look down like, oh crap, I'm pink. And there's nothing wrong with being pink, but when we don't recognize the intensity in which we are existing, in whichever polarity, there's something that's a little bit amiss, I think. Because if we wanted to live purely in light, why would we come in with bodies? The whole point of the physical experience is to know the polarity of opposites, because it provides perspective as to where we are occurring in space.

…

But we live in a space and time in which polarity does exist, and so this idea of the interplay between the light and the shadow, of witnessing, of recognizing, of choosing what we embrace or don't, is where the empowerment actually really comes from. The empowerment to better understand me, us, you plural, vous. This idea of: how do I need to show up in the world so that I can actually contribute very significantly?

…

There's this really beautiful Irish story, which I'll just very much condense, but it's a part of what many will call an Irish myth — but take it as you will. But this idea that there once was a young, handsome farmer who married a beautiful Fae maiden. So she was a fairy, and you know the Fae live on the opposite side of what we perceive to be of reality. So think about: they live on the other side of the mirror of our dimension and perspective. And they got married, and it was a joyous day for everyone except the Fae, except for the fairy.

And they had a wonderful life, but there were days of hardships, and there were challenges that came up, and they were terrible days for the farmer, but they were days of joy and wonder for the fairy. And one day, one of their children — the birth of their children had always before been this day of celebration for the villagers and the farmer, but had been a day of consternation and angst for the fairy.

And the farmer asked, "What up with that, G? How's that going down?" And she said very, very plainly — obviously not like that, but that's my rendition in the story — she said, "Well, you have to understand, we exist on the opposite side of the mirror. So when you rejoice because something new has come into your world, we mourn because something has left ours. And when you mourn because something has left your world, we rejoice because new life has entered our realm."

And when we can perceive this polarity of opposites is just that, this reframing empowers us to perceive our world as it really is, which is never-ending and constantly expanding.
